Burkina Faso: 'credible and sustainable solutions are necessary' - Press Conference (4 March 2021)

The United Nations of Earth reporting on this issue: "Burkina Faso: 'credible and sustainable solutions are necessary' - Press Conference (4 March 2021)"
The topics: Following his recent visit to Burkina Faso, Acting Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Ramesh Rajasingham today (4 Mar) told reporters in New York that life-saving response must be scaled up to meet “growing humanitarian needs in many parts of the country,” and “credible solutions, sustainable solutions” are necessary “to prevent this from becoming a protracted crisis with no end point in sight.” Rajasingham, who met with several communities affected and displaced by the violence in Djibo and Kaya, said, “if we don’t do both, people will get stuck in a vicious cycle of conflict, climatic shocks, humanitarian needs compounded by the COVID-19 crisis,” which will “inevitably lead to more food shortages, more instability, and more displacement.” The humanitarian official said, “one million people have been driven from their homes by armed groups in just one year. It is the world’s fastest displacement crisis.” He stressed that “if the drivers of the crisis are not addressed, it can only keep them in a holding pattern, depending on aid, which as we all know will hugely impact their dignity, but also their ability to recover when the opportunity arrives.” With rising insecurity and conflict over the past two years, humanitarian needs have increased sharply, and a record 3.5 million people will need humanitarian assistance in 2021.
