The topics: Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN Andreas Hadjichrysanthou said that his government welcomed the Security Council’s statement on the recent development in Cyprus, adding that “What is now crucial is to seek compliance with the resolutions on Varosha before the violations we now experience escalate further.” Speaking to reporters today (23 Jul), Ambassador Hadjichrysanthou said, “all actions already undertaken towards the status of Varosha, in contravention of the very clear provision of this Council’s resolution needs to be reversed without delay. The seriousness of the development in Variosha cannot be overstated, nor the impact on the peace in Cyprus.” He continued, “The Cyprus government is committed to the reunification of the Island as a bi-zonal bi-communal Federation with political equality as set out in the relevant Security Council resolutions. We rely on the active support of the international community to ensure that alternative schemes which are not intended to serve the best interest of Cyprus are not imposed through the creation of facts on the ground like the ones we are witnessing in Varosha, or through the refusal to negotiate reunification in the Cyprus peace process.” He reiterated, “My government will continue to monitor developments closely and we are certain that the United Nations will do likewise.” In a statement issued today by the President of the Security Council, the Security Council reaffirmed the status of Varosha as set out in previous United Nations Security Council resolutions, including resolution 550 (1984) and resolution 789 (1992). The Security Council reiterated that any attempt to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants is inadmissible and that no actions should be carried out in relation to Varosha that are not in accordance with its resolutions. The Security Council condemned the announcement in Cyprus by Turkish and Turkish Cypriot leaders on 20 July 2021 on the further reopening of a part of the fenced-off area of Varosha. The Security Council expressed its deep regret regarding these unilateral actions that run contrary to its previous resolutions and statements. The Security Council called for the immediate reversal of this course of action and the reversal of all steps taken on Varosha since October 2020. The Security Council underscored the need to avoid any further unilateral actions not in accordance with its resolutions and that could raise tensions on the island and harm prospects for a settlement. The Security Council stressed the importance of full respect and implementation of its resolutions, including the transfer of Varosha to UN administration and of respect for UNFICYP’s freedom of movement. The Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to an enduring, comprehensive and just settlement in accordance with the wishes of the Cypriot people, and based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as set out in relevant Security Council resolutions, and its support for the Secretary-General’s efforts. The Security Council shall remain seized of the matter.
