Elisabeth Spehar, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus emphasized the need to “avoid any unilateral actions that could increase tensions and derail the efforts to continue the dialogue in search of common ground including in Varosha.” After briefing the Security Council in closed consultations today (21 Jul) on the situation in Cyprus, Spehar told reporters, “I expressed the Secretariat’s deep concern over the recent developments and their negative impact on the relations between the parties and the possibilities to return to viable settlement talks.” She continued, “The Council is still deliberating on the issue of Varosha and the Secretariat will make further announcements in due course.”
