Mr. Gum San Nsang, Secretary General of the Kachin Political Interim Coordination Team (KPICT) Organizer's Concept Note (pdf): https://bit.ly/3xfZAZY Marking six months since the Tatmadaw seized power in Myanmar, United Kingdom Ambassador Barbara Woodward today (29 Jul) said, “what started as a political coup, has now become a multifaceted crisis, with political, economic, health, and humanitarian dimensions.” Speaking during a Security Council virtual Arria-formula meeting organised by the UK, Woodward said, the conflict has since escalated, and “more than 5,000 people have been detained.” The UK Ambassador pointed out that the COVID-19 situation was “of particular concern. She said, “the coup has resulted in a near total collapse of the healthcare system, and healthcare workers are being attacked and arrested. The virus is spreading through there population very fast indeed. By some estimates, in the next two weeks half of the population of Myanmar will be infected with COVID.” . Woodward called on the Tatmadaw “to take their commitments seriously” and stressed that the Council will “continue to consider all options” available to it “to encourage progress.” In his address to the meeting, Gum San Nsang of the Kachin Political Interim Coordination Team (KPICT), comprised of domestic and international organisations advocating for the rights of the Kachin ethnic groups in northern Myanmar, said, “under the moniker of democratic transition and national reconciliation with pro-democracy forces, the Burma army evaded serious international responses for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in this very 21st century. In Kachin State, over 130,000 civilians have been forcibly displaced due to the fighting. As the military consolidated its grip on power, there has been wholesale land confiscation, racketeering, plundering of natural resources, and destruction of pristine forest on industrial scale.” The theme of the Arria-formula meeting was, “Myanmar: Crisis, Conflict and COVID – where are we now.” “Arria-formula meetings" are informal, confidential gatherings which enable Security Council members to have a frank and private exchange of views, within a flexible procedural framework, with persons whom the inviting member or members of the Council believe it would be beneficial to hear and/or to whom they may wish to convey a message.
