The topics: Press Conference by Ms. Helen La Lime, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti, on the situation in Haiti. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) in Haiti, Helen La Lime, today (8 Jul) said, “the key is in the next two weeks” to ensure that the investigation into the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, “moves forward, and the perpetrators of this horrible crime are brought to justice.” Talking to reporters in New York via teleconference, La Lime said that during Security Council consultation, Haiti’s Ambassador Justin Viard “made the request for assistance with this investigation from international authorities, and so, it is important that this request be taken seriously.” She said that the UN’s Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) is prepared “to assist this investigation and to call for further expertise, as necessary.” La Lime explained, “Claude Joseph was Prime Minister of Haiti until a second Prime Minister would have been sworn in and had picked his government. That did not happen. And so, referring to article 149 of the constitution of Haiti, Haiti’s Prime Minister Joseph has explained that the government that is in place under his leadership continues to govern until such time that there is an election.” She noted that “there certainly are tensions, there are certain people on all sides of this issue having different interpretations of article 149.” That’s why, she said, “it’s important that dialogue happens, and that the Haitian authorities and Haitian stakeholders have a dialogue so that a way forward can be charted, one that gives the people of Haiti the opportunity to decide who the next government is.” The SRSG said, “President Juvenal was elected on 2017 was elected in 2017 for a five-year term which was due to expire in February 2022. And it was in that context that he was working to organize elections and to organize a referendum. Unfortunately, he was killed.” La Lime indicated that six alleged perpetrators had been killed while another two had been arrested. Another group of alleged perpetrators were currently surrounded by police.
