The topics: Opening remarks by Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on the General Assembly: 1st plenary meeting. Abdulla Shahid took oath of office today as the President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly. His presidency will highlight hope in “recovering from COVID-19, rebuilding sustainably, responding to the needs of the planet, respecting the rights of all people, and revitalizing the United Nations.” Taking the oath of the office in the General Assembly in New York, the Maldivian diplomat said, “I solemnly declare that I shall truthfully perform my duties and exercise the functions entrusted to me as the President of the United Nations General Assembly, in all loyalty, discretion and conscience.” Following the gavel of the new President, the 76th Session of the General Assembly opened. The President of the General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said, “on recovering from COVID-19, vaccinate the world is my top focus. We simply must close the gap of vaccine exercise.” He noted that he will be holding a high-level thematic debate on vaccine equity with leading experts and world leaders soon. On rebuilding sustainability from the pandemic, the President of the General Assembly said that he has been work with the Economic and Social Council, the United Nations system and the international financial institutions to “help ensure that the socio-economic recovery is forward thinking – it is bluer, greener and more resilient.” #UNGA #UNGA76
