The topics: The President of the Human Rights Council, Federico Villegas, said the war in Ukraine “must stop now“, adding that the conflict “has led to senseless loss of life" and “massive devastation". Speaking to journalists in New York on Friday (22 April), Villegas said he believes "the people in Ukraine have endured horrors and they need peace." In the context peace, he said that, as the president of the Human Rights Council, he was “very proud“ to lead “a body that was able to deliver timely on this issue, at the time when other maybe we're not able to deliver." Explaining the work of a Commission of Inquiry created by the Council, Villegas said that they are collecting evidence and testimonies that will be the base of their work and stressed the importance of access to all areas. “And that is precisely the added value of the commission of inquiry created by the Council. Because, as you know, it is an independent commission, and the idea is that this commission has the credibility and the possibility to have access to all areas where they need to do their work. So my message, if I'd have to have one, is to cooperate," he said. According to the Argentine diplomat, the goal of this work is to “move forward in the identification of responsibilities and the bringing to justice of those responsible."
