The topics: The UN chief of humanitarian affairs Martin Griffiths said, “the situation in Al Hol is a disgrace,” and called once again on all member states involved to “take urgent action to fulfill their responsibility to repatriate their citizens through all available routes.” Addressing the Security Council today (20 May) in New York, Griffiths said, “hostilities, including airstrikes and shelling in northwest Syria continue to affect civilians including women and children, and constant care must be taken to spare them.” He continued, “the insecurity continues in the Al Hol camp so far this year in 2022. Thirteen murders and four attempted murders have been reported in that camp. An incident on the 10th of May targeted an international NGO sector.” Griffiths added, “as a result, all activities in Phase Five are suspended, phase five of our security arrangements until the safety and security for humanitarian workers can be reassessed and insured.” The UN chief of humanitarian affairs also told the Council that the United Nations is now working on the modalities of its 5th interagency crossline convoy, in line with the operational plan that is has submitted to this Council - across line convoys to northwest Syria. He said, “this plan focuses on the implementation of those interagency crossline convoys to communities in Idlib and Aleppo, and that has been extended, that plan has been extended through December 2022.” Griffiths also said, “the crossline operations cannot under current conditions, replace the size or the scope, or the massive UN cross border operation. Failure to renew the authorization disrupts lifesaving aid for the people living in the northwest and including more than one million children as part of that population.” US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield whose country is holding the Presidency of this month’s Council said, “this year, we urge the Security Council to not only renew the mandate for the UN cross-border assistance delivery mechanism but also increase the number of crossing points to meet the rising demand for humanitarian aid in Syria.” She continued, “the UN estimates that 14.6 million Syrians need humanitarian assistance in 2022, a nearly 10 percent increase over last year. We simply have to get this done – both the renewal and the expansion. This is vital to so many people, especially at a time when food and fuel prices are skyrocketing, forcing families to make difficult decisions about whether to buy food, medicine, or fuel.” On the statement by Turkey on creating a safe zone inside of his country, the Syrian Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh said, “the government of the Syrian Arab Republic condemns such statements as such plans that undermine the unity and territorial integrity of Syria.” He continued, “we demand international organization not to bargain with the Erdogan regime over the lands of others, not to support such projects that are based on genocide and changing the democratic construction and harming the rights of the Syrian people, which would have catastrophic repercussions on security, stability and peace in the region and the world.”
