Ukraine: UN Chief visits ship in Istanbul heading to pick-up the largest cargo of grain yet exported

Secretary-General António Guterres visited on Saturday (20 Aug) in Istanbul, Türkiye, the World Food Programme (WFP) ship Brave Commander and the SSI Invincible 2, which is heading to Ukraine to pick-up the largest cargo of grain yet exported under the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Upon arrival, the Secretary-General boarded a pilot boat in the Sea of Marmara where he sailed next to the M/V Brave Commander, the WFP ship which picked up more than 23,000 of wheat in Odesa and was making its way to deliver its precious cargo to the horn of Africa to help people on the verge of famine. The Secretary-General joined a group of inspectors from the Joint Coordination Center and also boarded the vessel SSI INVINCIBLE II. The ship is on its way to Chornomorsk in Ukraine to load close to 50,000 tonnes of grain – the largest shipment to leave Ukraine since the start of the war. Credit UN Photo/Mark Garten
