UN Chief Tribute to the memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II | United Nations

Briefing by António Guterres, Secretary-General, at the Tribute to the memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Secretary-General also noted that the first part of her remarkable reign saw many nations gaining independence from Britain and the formation of the Commonwealth, a diverse multilateral group. Guterres said that Queen Elizabeth “defied geopolitical gravity” and “was a consummate diplomat.” The UN chief noted that “she often wielded her diplomatic skills as the only woman in the room” and recalled when she spoke at the General Assembly and “called on leaders to demonstrate their devotion to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.” “She well understood that formal bonds and agreements are only half the story,” the Secretary-General said. For seven decades, Guterres continued, “Queen Elizabeth transcended her role to connect at the most human level with everyone she met — world leaders and ordinary people alike.” For that, he said, the monarch “was among the most respected and loved global leaders of our age.” “Queen Elizabeth’s passing will be deeply felt, particularly for those who knew and loved her best. Her legacy is an inspiring example of leadership that serves,” the UN chief concluded.
