Developing Racial Justice Index - UN Working Group on People of African Descent | United Nations
Hybrid press briefing by the Chairperson of the UN Working Group of experts on people of African Descent, Ms. Catherine S. Namakula. The UN Working Group of Experts on People Of African Descent called on all Member States to develop a racial justice index, reflecting the lived realities of people of African descent across the world. “We particularly called for the development of a racial justice index, reflecting the lived realities of people of African descent, to measure the performance of States in this regard.” “We, as a working group, are particularly concerned about the treatment of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers of African descent and we call upon States to guarantee their access to safety, involvement and justice. We commend the steps taken by some States, of course, at the international, national and regional level to ensure the advancement of the discourse on racial justice, but also decry the situation of children of African descent that have not been treated as children at all.” “We call for the use of education to be revised in its use as an instrument of racial discrimination to now becoming an instrument against racial discrimination. We are calling upon all countries to reeducate themselves about African history, where the dignity of people of African descent has been, of course, brutalized, to be restored in that regard.”
