Afghanistan: Rebuilding from the Earthquakes | United Nations

In early March 2025, Indrika Ratwatte, the UN Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan, visited Herat province to assess recovery efforts following the devastating earthquakes of October 2023. As Resident Coordinator in Afghanistan, Ratwatte's visit aimed to observe the United Nations' initiatives in rebuilding communities and to evaluate ongoing services for Afghan deportees and returnees. The October 2023 earthquakes caused extensive damage in Herat, resulting in over 1,500 fatalities and injuring more than 2,600 individuals. Approximately 50,000 houses were destroyed or damaged, leaving many residents without shelter. Ratwatte's visit underscores the UN's commitment to supporting Afghanistan's recovery and highlights the ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian needs of those affected by the earthquakes.
