Attacks on media in Haiti

The security situation is further deteriorating in Haiti, according to UNESCO and several media outlets. In early March, attacks on the media by armed gangs intensified, alongside rising tensions in Port-au-Prince, the capital. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization warns that the ability of journalists to disseminate accurate information is severely limited as a result. The attacks targeted several of the country's most reputable newspapers and broadcasters, including Le Nouvelliste, which has survived dictatorships and disasters for more than a century. According to UNESCO, the increase in attacks on the media in Haiti by armed gangs that control most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, is aimed at intimidating journalists and sowing chaos.
