1960: New African States Join The UN | United Nations



In 1960, a wave of independence spread across Africa. That year, 16 of the 17 new States admitted to the United Nations came from the African continent. Today, Cameroon, Togo, Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Senegal and Mali commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations together with the Organization at large.
