Comments to the media by Jérôme Bonnafont, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of September, on climate and security, joined by signatories of the Climate, Peace and Security Joint Pledges. Outside the Council, French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont, joined by signatories of the Climate Peace and Security Joint Pledges read a statement on behalf of the Group. Bonnafont said, “climate change, ecological changes, natural disasters, as well as the illegal exploitation and trafficking of natural resources have adverse effects on the stability of the DRC and should be addressed as peace and security risks in the region. These impacts often exacerbate vulnerabilities of local populations, as well as competition over land and pastures, forest, and water resources. Addressing such risks in DRC is also essential for the security and stability of the Great Lake region.”
