Aiming Higher with and for Refugees | United Nations

Education transforms lives. It provides the skills, credentials, and networks that underpin economic participation, social cohesion, and long-term self-reliance. Expanding access to higher education is one of the most powerful investments that we can make collectively not only for refugees but also for the communities and countries that host them. Today millions of refugee children remain out of school, with participation falling sharply after primary education. Mary Maker, global advocate for refugee education and founder of Elimisha Kakuma, an organization connecting refugees to education opportunities, and UNHCR High Commissioner Salih will engage in a timely discussion about how the world must bolster access to education for refugees, and achieve SDG 4 for all, to reduce dependency and support refugee self-reliance. MODERATOR: - Ephrem Kossaify, United Nations resident correspondent, Arab News SPEAKERS: - Mary Maker, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador - Barham Salih, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
