Children and Armed Conflict: Over 430,000 Grave Violations Since 2005 - Briefing | United Nations

Briefing by Catherine Russell, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), on Children and Armed Conflict. She reported that since 2005, the United Nations has verified more than 430,000 grave violations against children in armed conflicts. Last year, she added, “the highest numbers of grave violations were verified in the State of Palestine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nigeria. And these are only the violations the United Nations was able to verify. The true scale is undoubtedly greater.” She also said, “Digital technologies are also creating new avenues for recruitment, exploitation and abuse. The Security Council's recent adoption of resolution 2832, addressing the impact of digital technologies on violations against children in armed conflict, is a welcome step towards confronting these risks. Advances in technology must strengthen the protection of children - not expose them to new forms of harm.”
