Israel: Eisenkot tapped to form new government • FRANCE 24 English

Following inconclusive elections in Israel on October 27, President Isaac Herzog has tasked Gadi Eisenkot with forming the next government. Although 67 lawmakers, including members of Arab-led parties, backed Eisenkot, only 46 supported incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Eisenkot now has 28 days, with a possible two-week extension, to secure a coalition commanding at least 61 of the Knesset's 120 seats. Having ruled out a government with Arab-led parties, he may seek support from two ultra-Orthodox parties, or attempt to govern with a minority coalition, provided it wins a parliamentary confidence vote.
